01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Set along a quiet street north of Senso-ji, Umemura is renowned for its signature mame kanten: a bowl filled with simmered red peas and cubes of agar jelly bathed in syrup. Cooked until plump and glossy, the peas are exceptionally soft and smooth, offering an unadorned pairing that highlights the clean, refreshing flavor of the slippery agar jelly.

The menu features a broad selection of traditional sweets with versatile toppings. Options range from classic anmitsu—crowned with rich, smooth sweet bean paste, chewy gyuhi mochi, and fruit—to cream anmitsu with vanilla ice cream, as well as apricot-topped variations that introduce a bright tartness. Those who prefer dessert without bean paste can choose mitsumame or apricot mitsumame, while tokoroten offers a savory, refreshing alternative dressed in vinegar soy sauce.

During warmer weather, cold treats include shaved ice creations such as kori mame kanten, which incorporates the shop's signature peas and agar, alongside iced shiruko and matcha-flavored kori uji kintoki. Inside, the casual space accommodates guests with both raised tatami seating and counter spots. Takeaway is also offered for items like anmitsu, mitsumame, and tokoroten. Note that reservations are not accepted, and payment is strictly in cash, so it helps to prepare yen in advance.
